iPad continues to lead the tablet market in web traffic

The competition against the Apple iPad is constantly growing. There are a number of popular Android tablets on the market, particularly the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD. While the competition is improving, the Apple iPad is still by far the most popular tablet on the market overall.
Advertising and analytics company Chitika has released its metrics update for the December 2012 tablet market. The company found that while competition is increasing, the iPad is still by far the dominant tablet on the market. According to the firm for every 100 page impressions made from an iPad, other tablets in the market produce only 14.75 combined.

According to the firm for every 100 page impressions made from an iPad, other tablets in the market produce only 14.75 combined.
That means that 87% of all web traffic generated by tablets in North America is made using an iPad. After the iPad, the tablet generates the most web traffic is the Kindle producing a mere 4.88 page views for every 100 page views produced on an iPad. The metrics company estimates that the Kindle has 4.25% of all tablet web traffic.
Other non-iPad tablets that generate traffic include the Samsung Galaxy tablets at 3.04 page views per 100 iPad impressions. If you’re wondering where the Microsoft Surface RT tablet falls, it generates only 0.22 impressions per 100 iPad impressions.

Top Five Android Apps

Top 5 Android Apps Of 2012

images (1)I have been an Android user for more than a year now and have seen the ecosystem progress from Eclair to Ice Cream Sandwich. The platform has indeed gotten better with age and now looks like an offering which will give Apple and iOS a lot of headaches in the near future. Like the iPhone, the heart of Android are the apps. Android, however in contrast to iOS is much more customizable thus making it a clear choice for ‘Open ecosystem’ enthusiasts like me.
So let us quickly get into my top 5 Android apps list.
1. Pocket:
There are many read-it-later apps out there but Pocket on Android is simply the best app for information junkies who don’t find the time to always be hooked to their smartphone. Before Pocket, I used to be always on my smartphone consuming content and conveniently forgetting that I had a day job. Now with Pocket the situation is much more stable.
With Pocket, you can simply save the everything that you want to read on the net for later reading. Are you on your desktop? No issues, you can install the browser plugin. You can use Android’s built in sharing function to save every piece of web or app content onto Pocket. Pocket’s interface is the best and the app also allows tagging and archival. It is free to download, so go get it.
2. TuneIn Radio:
Smartphones do indeed bring out the music junkie in you because of the easy availability of music streaming apps. One app that caught my attention was TuneIn Radio, which is actually the best radio and music streaming app there is on the platform. However varied your tastes may be, the app will get you the music that you love without any hassles.  It even has News, Podcasts, Sports, Trending and Local Radio features.
The app comes in both the paid and free versions but I suggest that you go for the full version to unlock all the features in the app.

3. Endomondo:
If you have resolved to get fit and workout when the New Year starts, then this workout tracker is the best thing there is. It has all kinds of crazy features which track every single aspect of your workout experience. It covers all kinds of workouts and sports right from windsurfing to boxing and many more.
The app uses GPS to track your distance and the calories you burn during each workout. This gives you some very good looking reports along with Google maps integration. The best part about the app is the social network that comes with it where you can add workout buddies and connect with many other people.
The app is available in Pro and Free versions but I recommend using the Pro version if you are serious about your workouts.

4. Pixlr Express:
Although Instagram remains the most talked about photo app this year, I have to say that the Pixlr Express from Autodesk is the best photo editing app on Android. The app has all the usual filters but also adds a bevy of awesome effects and edit options which let you touch up the images and correct them for contrast, color, red eye, sharpness and everything else.
Adding filters and effects is a huge bonus. Incidentally, this app has more filters than Instagram. You can also add cool effects and borders to your images. There is no social networking backend like Instagram but there are social sharing functions included. The app is free to download.

5. Wunderlist:
I tend to forget a lot of things and this has previously wreaked havoc in my personal and professional life. So I finally started searching for apps that would help me remember tasks easily and efficiently. Even though Evernote seems to be the favorite for remembering things, I found another very competent app that was completely cross platform and nicely designed. It is called Wunderlist and has currently been upgraded to Wunderlist 2. The new version brings with a lot of features and design tweaks. The app is designed to do one thing – remember tasks and it does a really good job.
You can have many lists like personal, work, food etc.. and keep setting tasks for yourself. You can choose to set reminders to these tasks along with due dates. The app sends you a notification using push capabilities of Android. It also helps in collaboration with other Wunderlist users and is a cheap and good way for teams and groups to get their stuff done. The app is free and is available for almost every mobile and desktop platform.

So these were the top 5 apps I discovered this year. I have not included apps like Gmail, Whatsapp, Twitter etc. because these are common and everyone  uses them by default.
So what are your top 5 Android apps? Tell me in the comments.

IT India

IT sector may see better hiring in 2013: Survey

Information Technology services and pharmaceuticals are likely to drive hiring growthin 2013, to fill mid and senior positions, said HeadHonchos.com, a leading job search and career management portal.

"The data in 'Management Hiring: Perspective report 2012', indicate that IT or software services and pharmaceuticals or life sciences could potentially drive the hiring growth in 2013," HeadHonchos said in a release.

Pharma has emerged as a powerful employer, replacing industries like telecom, which saw significant hiring in the previous year, it said.

The construction or real estate industry, despite slower growth continues to see hiring, given the infrastructure thrust in the country, it further said.

Foreign Direct Investment ( FDI) in retail, along with providing an impetus to senior hiring in retail, is also expected to provide a much-needed boost to the real estate industry, it pointed out.

Banking and finance is expected to be the dark horse, spurring employment on the back of the Banking Reforms Bill, it said.

In 2012, employers looked most for professionals in IT or software services, FMCG industries and BPO or ITES, followed by real estate and pharmaceuticals or life sciences to fill mid or senior positions.

The data released is based on the searches conducted by employers on the portal during last one year.

Elaborating on the findings, HeadHonchos.com CEO Uday Sodhi said, "Middle and senior management hiring in 2012 was reflective of the less than optimistic business or economic performance. Our discussions for 2013, with employers across industries indicate a revival of hiring for mid-senior management positions, signalling progressive business intent."

Next-gen iPhone, iPad to have smaller battery?

Apple is reportedly in continued talks with Japanese manufacturer Sharp for its Igzo (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) display panels for the next-generation iPhone, iPad and iPad mini.A Digitimes report has cited sources as saying that Apple is, however, concerned over the number of panels that Sharp can manufacture during 2013 to meet its requirementsThe report also said Apple is assessing if AU Optronics' L5C line can manufacture the required number of displays for its mobile devices for 2013. Sharp has licensed its Igzo manufacturing technology to Innolux Corp as well, which may emerge as the third supplier for this display panel for Apple, sources say,Igzo displays are thinner and lighter than amorphous silicon (a-Si) panels that are currently used in Apple iPhone, iPad and iPad mini. This will reduce the weight of the devices, especially the fourth-generation iPad, which is heavier thaniPad 2 and weighs over 650 gram. With the integration of this type of screen, the upcoming Apple gadgets will be lighter, more power-efficient and require smaller batteries without compromising on run-time.This information seems to confirm a report on Japanese site Macotakara, which had stated Apple's next iPad will be thinner and lighter than the current model.Sharp is going through a steep shortfall of Igzo displays, but launched the first mobile to have this screen in Q4 2012. Previously, the third-generation iPad was supposed to feature Igzo displays, but that plan was abandoned when Sharp was unable to produce the requisite number of screens for the model.

Facebook launches self-destructing messages

Social networking site Facebook has launched a new app which erases pictures and messages within 10 seconds of being sent.

It is an advanced version of one of the the social networking site's original apps, the 'poke'.

The equivalent of a head nod or wink, the 'poke' in its old form is rarely used today as the site has become more advanced, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

It has now been reinvented to be called 'Facebook Poke' and allows users to send fleeting messages, pokes, photos and 10-second videos to friends.

The messages expire after a set period of time, from 1 to 10 seconds, and cannot be retrieved by either party again, making it perfect for sending salacious images without leaving a trail.

"With the Poke app, you can poke or send a message, photo, or video to Facebook friends to share what you're up to in a lightweight way," said the site in a blog post announcing the new app.

When you open the app, you can choose from a set of icons at the bottom of the screen to send a poke, type a 120-character message, open the camera to snap a picture - you cannot choose an existing photo - or shoot a 10-second video.

You then decide how long you want the recipient to see the message for.

It is said the new facility is similar to Snapchat, an app which is popular with younger age users, and which has gained a reputation as a tool for sending risque images.

Facebook is encouraging users to report inappropriate messages.

"If you ever see something you're uncomfortable with, you can click the gear menu and report it," the paper quoted the company as saying.

Developed by mobile value added services provider CanvasM, the application tracks a user's location and sends SOS messages to selected contacts in case of an emergency.

The company is also in the process of integrating the solution with Delhi Police's back-end IT infrastructure. "This will enable Delhi Police to also get messages when somebody calls out for help and prompt action can be taken," he added.

There has been an outrage in the country over alleged rape of a paramedical student by six men in a moving bus. While the application is free for consumers in the Delhi-NCR region, other users will need to pay a subscription fee of Rs 100 per annum.

"Such incidents are shameful. The application is our way of contributing to make women feel safe," Mitra said. Fight Back is available for smartphones running on Android, Blackberry and Symbian operating systems, he said.

"We will soon come up with a similar SMS-based application so that the benefits can be extended to non-smartphone users as well," he added. While the application has been available for sometime now, it has seen about 3,000-4,000 downloads.

"The pick up is there but not as much as we had expected. We have been busy with building the ecosystem. We will now work on spreading awareness about the application," he said.

To spread awareness about Fight Back, the company is talking to various companies, including BPOs, and colleges. In addition, they are looking at tie-up with telecom operators and NGOs to promote the service.
